Cross tattoo designs have been around for a very long time. Of course, the cross obviously stands for the religious beliefs which so many people have; but there are many different meanings, as well and different types of crosses as well. In just about all Christian religions and denominations, the cross is an important symbol because of the crucifixion of Christ and since it is synonymous with Christianity.
If this is what the cross means to you, then you should definitely consider it. Also think about whether you want to portray your cross tattoo design with the image of Jesus or simply the cross itself. There are many different Cross tattoo designs, so you don’t have to stick to the three dimensional cross’ which most of us are familiar with.
Celtic cross: This cross is very similar to the cross that we have come to know today, but the only difference is that it has a large circle which connects the arms of the cross. In Ireland, the cross is thought to be introduced by Saint Patrick, as an opening to Christianity. This was done by placing the sun’s symbol in the middle of the cross and in addition to containing scrollwork, intricate cravings and because of the scrollwork; it is sometimes called a tribal tattoo.
Tip: Make sure you know what your design means before you get it inked!
Maltese cross: The Maltese is a symbol of strength and courage. It is composed of four equal arms with the outside edges larger and then narrowing down towards the middle of the cross. Sometimes the outside edges of the cross also dip into the center, creating eight points, which is known as the ‘eight points of courage.’
Iron cross: This is a variation of the Maltese cross, which has been used throughout Europe. The inside of the arms curve inward and has been used as a symbol in the military for many decades.
